Wigmore Hall rallies on rail to win Northern Dancer

Jamie Spencer settled Wigmore Hall back off a slow pace and hugged the rail to victory as Wigmore Hall out-dueled frontrunner Simmard and Al Khali, an even deeper closer, to win the Northern Dancer Turf (G1) at Woodbine in Toronto, Canada.  The win is the first since taking the Jebel Hatta (G2) on Super Thursday at Meydan, when he defeated eventual Dubai Duty Free (G1) winner Presvis.  A highly-troubled trip in his last visit to North America when fourth in the Arlington Million (G1), Wigmore Hall has made his last five starts in five different countries (UAE, Hong Kong, Singapore, USA, Canada).

A renewal of his Dubai campaign is expected in 2012.

  1. Wigmore Hall was the class horse in the G1 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes at Woodbine on Sunday. In my mind, the only question this horse had to answer to win the race was would he stay the 1-1/2 trip? As the Northern Dancer was the first time that Wigmore Hall had ever raced beyond 1-1/4 in his career. But being the son of 2-time BC Turf winner, High Chaparral, I felt like 1-1/2 would certainly be within his wheelhouse.
