Wigmore Hall due next in inaugural Champions Stakes

The new British Champions Series’ crowning event is scheduled for October 15, and in 2011, it will host one of racing’s newest Grade 1 winners as Wigmore Hall is expected to start, reported trainer Michael Bell.  The 10-furlong Qipco Champion Stakes is the featured middle-distance event, and serves as the next stop for Sunday’s Northern Dancer Turf (G1) winner from Woodbine.  Wigmore Hall took the 2011 Jebel Hatta (G2) before a third in the Dubai Duty Free (G1).  Geoffrey Riddle has the full story.

  1. When you look back at Wigmore Hall’s 5th place finish in the 2010 Champion Stakes, he’s probably continued to improve as much as any horse that faced in the race at Newmarket that day. He had only Twice Over, Vision D’Etat, Debussy, and Gitano Hernando ahead of him that day. All G1 winners. Wigmore Hall just ran a strong race to win the G1 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes at Woodbine on Sunday. Covering 1-1/2, and becoming a G1 winner. Both for the first time in his career. But I get the sense that Wigmore Hall may be a little more comfortable back at 1-1/4 again? He’s raced and ran very well at Royal-Ascot before in his career. Finishing 3rd of 15 in the 2010 listed Hampton Court Stakes. Beaten only a neck by Afsare and Quadrille in a race that all 3 of them hit the wire together. With So You Think likely to skip the Champion Stakes now that he’s been declared by Coolmore for this years Arc. I believe the Champion Stakes looks like a wide open affair that Wigmore Hall certainly has a legit chance of having his say in. TJMO.
