Viva Pataca back in form, defeating game Lizard’s Desire in QE II Cup

The old stalwart of Hong Kong racing, Viva Pataca, second in the 2008 Dubai Sheema Classic (G1) found more of his best on Sunday when winning the Audemars Piguet Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1) under Weichong Marwing, defeating 2010 Dubai World Cup (G1) runner-up Lizard’s Desire by a neck.

The work of Presvis was always going to be difficult considering the lack of pace in the race, and the Jebel Hatta (G2) winner could not repeat the feat of a year ago, checking in a close fifth.  While Able One landed the Champions Mile for the second time in his career, Mike De Kock trainee Imbongi failed to pick up much of the running with a mid-pack seventh, beaten almost four lengths.

  1. Boy, has Lizard’s Desire ever become “top dog” among a great list of South African horses? He had a great Carnival, with that legendary finish with Gloria De Campeao in the World Cup, then goes to Hong Kong, and again run’s a very game 2nd in the Q.E.II Cup. I thought Collection, Presvis, and Westphalia(Super Pistachio), would all three figure in the race more than they did. But I take nothing away from Lizard’s Desire. He’s a genuine Grade or Group 1 horse for sure. Right up at the top of a great list of South African horses that include the likes of Imbongi, Mr.Brock, Archipenko, Jay Peg, and King’s Gambit. That’s pretty rich company to be sitting at the top of. IMO.
