Variety Club done for now, maybe for good

In an interview with the South China Morning Post while visiting Hong Kong to launch his new international syndicate venture, trainer Mike de Kock reported that the future of Godolphin Mile (G2) and Champions Mile (G1) winner Variety Club is under consideration, and that it won’t include the Breeders’ Cup. After winning emphatically in Hong Kong in May, the plan for the rest of the year was a three-country, three-race stretch over three months, the Prix de la Foret (G1), Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1), and Hong Kong Mile (G1). DeKock ruled them out, and suggested retirement was also possible, when speaking with Andrew Hawkins today in Hong Kong.

  1. Variety Club was the one horse I had no hesitation saying could and likely would dethrone Wise Dan in the Breeders Cup Mile. I think it would take an at his very best Toronado among the likely shippers to prevent Wise Dan from tying Goldikova’s mark of 3 straight BC Mile wins now.
