UPDATE: Gloria De Campeao retirement in doubt

Conflicting reports Sunday indicate some question as to whether or not 2010 Dubai World Cup winner Gloria De Campeao will be sidelined with an injury or outright retired.  Patrick Barbe, advisor to owner Stefan Friborg, was quoted by Press Association as saying “time will tell if he will be retired or not.”

Barbe’s comments about Gloria De Campeao compared the 7-year-old’s Dubai World Cup performance to Zenyatta’s win in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), and indicated he thought Gloria De Campeao’s performance probably came against an even better field.  Whether these comments were intended to milk more of the pre-stud retirement buzz, quantifying the fabulous career for the Brazilian-bred, or indicative of a possible return, were uncertain.

Regardless, the ledger stands and Gloria De Campeao was the winner of the world’s richest horse race which included a field of 12 Grade/Group 1 winners; an accomplishment few, if any racehorses can ever claim.
