Two more from Singapore queued for Carnival

Michael Freedman, already planning to send Better Be The One and Cash Luck to the Dubai World Cup Carnival, will now add Always Certain and The Comedian to the list after strong performances on Friday.  Michael Lee has the full story from Kranji.

Steven Burridge, an Aussie native training in Singapore for some time, has had two wins from his three starters at the lucrative Carnival (Dark Matter, Captain Obvious), the first such wins for Singapore.  The island nation did claim their first Dubai World Cup programme win with Rocket Man in March, annexing the Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1).  Ip Man runs at Saturday’s meeting, the fourth of Burridge’s contingent.

I was quite impressed by Captain Obvious’s win on the Friday card. He’s a really physically fit looking specimen for sure. A big, bullish looking gray, and I’ve always had a soft spot for grays over the years. I didn’t know a whole lot about Captain Obvious going into this race other than he’s raced primarily in Singapore during his career, and that he’s got an astounding lifetime record. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m reasonably sure that Fridays win at Meydan gives Captain Obvious 16 wins in 22 lifetime starts, now? You don’t see many sprinters anywhere in the world with stats like that? I read where his trainer, Steven Burridge, said that the G1 Golden Shaheen on world cup night is the ultimate target for Captain Obvious if they can get into the field? He only beat Hitchens and Iver Bridge Lad by less than a length on Friday. But it didn’t appear to me that Chavez was really asking him for his absolute best? He looked like a horse with a bit left in the locker passing the post, IMO. 16 wins in 22 starts could make Captain Obvious one of the best viable e/w options in the Golden Shaheen if you’re looking to take on the short price sprinters like Black Caviar and Sepoy? Assuming they actually show up in Dubai come March? JMO.
