Toast of New York given Breeders’ Cup Classic goal after Del Mar second

2014 UAE Derby (G2) winner Toast of New York got back on the all-weather last weekend at Del Mar and ran a bang-up second to the unbeaten Shared Belief in the $1 million Pacific Classic (G1). Trainer Jamie Osborne was thrilled with the effort, suggesting the son of Thewayyouare improved over his Dubai run from March, and now could be given an aim for the Breeders’ Cup Classic on dirt at Santa Anita in November.

  1. Toast of New York is clearly a horse that enjoys racing on synthetic surfaces, but how he’ll handle the switch to conventional dirt is the million dollar question. There is hope he may handle the switch without issue because there’s been several American trainers who’ve had success racing Thewayyouare sired offspring on conventional dirt in the United States. I figure the worst case scenario for trainer Jamie Osborne running Toast of New York in the Breeders Cup Classic is he’ll find out how his colt is gonna fair over the surface prior to his running in the Dubai World Cup at Meydan in March which will now be ran on conventional dirt instead of tapeta.
