In a long-anticipated press-release, the Dubai Racing Club confirmed that their iconic new racecourse, Meydan, will install the Tapeta synthetic surface on its 1,750 meters course, inside a 2,400 meters turf course. Tapeta has been used on the training track at Godolphin’s Al Quoz Stables for years while it was installed at a training track in Nad Al Sheba in March 2009 and has been used since. The 2010 Dubai World Cup (G1), with its lofty $10,000,000 purse, will be contested over Tapeta at a distance of 2,000 meters (approximately 10 furlongs) on March 27, 2010.

Tapeta was created by former Breeders’ Cup winning trainer Michael Dickinson and is used at Presque Isle Downs and Golden Gate Fields in the United States. While the marketplace for synthetic surfaces has been quite competitive, with Tapeta fighting for share with Polytrack, Pro-Ride, and Cushion Track, there have been relatively few, if any, published complaints about the surface, its durability, and its place in American racing, which takes place primarily on non-grass surfaces.
