The 2010 Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1) winner, Kinsale King, will get back on track Sunday, four months after being scratched the morning of the 2011 Dubai Golden Shaheen, eventually won by Rocket Man. Trained by Carl O’Callaghan, Kinsale King won his 2011 debut at Golden Gate Fields but was turned out soon after his World Cup morning issues. Smiling Tiger, Timeform’s top rated synthetic horse in the world, drew the rail in the race. Euroears, second behind Rocket Man in this year’s edition, makes his first start back as well for trainer Bob Baffert.

After a disappointing scratch the morning of the 2011 Dubai World Cup (G1), Kinsale King was sent back to America with hopes of getting back on track, but trainer Carl O’Callaghan sent his charge to the farm. Suggesting he needed some time to grow out of some ailments, the patient Irishman was hopeful they would have the son of Yankee Victor back for a summer campaign. Indeed, Kinsale King recorded his first meaningful bit of trackwork last weekend and is on point for a late July start in the Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) at the seaside Del Mar oval. Kinsale King defeated Rocket Man in the 2010 Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1) before Rocket Man came back to win that, plus the KrisFlyer International Sprint this year.

After an easy barrier trial win, Rocket Man took his first race off the shelf in fine form, winning a stakes event at Kranji over the Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1) trip of 1,200 metres. Just every so slightly slow from the gate, Rocket Man settled just off the pace and then shot through to the lead around the turn. After clicking 800 metres in 47.80 seconds, Rocket Man straightened and finished the final 400 in 22.93 seconds, stopping the watch in 1:10.73, winning by six lengths over old stalwart Capablanca.

It was a busy week in Dubai racing last week, so we catch up with news from the sprinting division. 2010 Dubai Golden Shaheen victor Kinsale King earned his first win since that race when making his seasonal debut last week, and he did it on the same surface he’ll revisit at Meydan. Racing last Thursday at Golden Gate Fields in northern California, Kinsale King broke just a bit slow and eased into contention before pulling clear under a hand ride from new jockey Mike Smith. Trainer Carl O’Callaghan declared his charge ready to go. Steve Andersen has more from the Daily Racing Form.

Sunday’s US$1.8 million Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint (G1) features a trio of Dubai racing veterans in the 1,200 meters dash. Rocket Man, a tough-luck second to Kinsale King in the Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1) got over the Sha Tin polytrack in good order in Wednesday’s trackwork. Rocket Man is coming off a deadheat victory at Sha Tin in the Jockey Club Sprint (G1) on 21 November and could become the first non-HK trained runner to win the event since 2001 when Australia’s Falvelon took consecutive editions. After the November win, trainer Patrick Shaw indicated he was surprised with how strong his charge took the right-handed win.

Richard’s Kid was send postward at a staggering 8-1 off his Pacific Classic (G1) win and tracked down heavily-backed Twirling Candy to win the Goodwood Stakes (G1) at Hollywood Park’s Oak Tree meeting. Seventh beaten about three lengths in the 2010 Dubai World Cup (G1), Richard’s Kid was third in his first two starts following Dubai but now has consecutive Grade 1 wins, pushing his lifetime mark to nine wins from 27 starts.

Red Desire was a solid third in her first American start, finishing just a length behind upset winner Ave in the Flower Bowl Invitational (G1). Medicated with Lasix for the first time today, Red Desire sat in a cozy rail position and struck the front turning for home before being headed in the stretch over the yielding going, her first start over softer turf. Her first start since May, Red Desire likely needed this start and it could propel her to a solid run in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1).

Gitano Hernando, starting for the first time since the Dubai World Cup, was a narrow winner of the Diamond Stakes (G3) at Dundalk on Friday, earning a spot in the gate for the Breeders’ Cup Marathon (G3). Hung up in traffic, he was guided wide to run down Wade Giles in the final strides. It remains to be seen whether or not Gitano Hernando comes back to America, this time for a Breeders’ Cup even. Team Valor skipped the Breeders’ Cup last year after Gitano Hernando won the Goodwood Stakes at Santa Anita.

Redding Colliery, regularly behind Desert Party and Regal Ransom in the 2009 Dubai racing season, has been increasingly useful in the US of late, winning Saturday’s Hawthorne Gold Cup (G2) over Giant Oak and A.U. Miner. Using a front-running style, Redding Colliery was a near seven-length winner of May’s Lone Star Park Handicap (G3) over eventual Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) winner Awesome Gem.

It was also announced that Kinsale King, winner of the 2010 Dubai Golden Shaheen, will train up to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) instead of prepping at Hollywood Park in the Ancient Title (G1), a race won by Gayego in 2009.

The 2010 Dubai Golden Shaheen winner is well-respected as the third choice in the market for Friday’s Darley July Cup (G1) at Newmarket, a race shaping up as a rematch of the Golden Jubilee (G1) from the Royal Ascot meet. While it was clear the Carl O’Callaghan trained American-bred Dubai winner is able to get over the grassy going, he will face the similar tough European competition when Starspangledbanner, ahead of him in the Ascot race, and King’s Stand (G1) repeater Equiano line up.

Frankie Dettori rides the mare Fleeting Spirit in an attempt to replicate her win in this race a year ago when Tom Queally rode her to the victory. Kinsale King starts from post 13 in a 14 horse field and is partnered once again with Kieren Fallon. Below is video from the 2010 Golden Jubilee.
