Sweet Lightning strong in post-Carnival return

With four starts at the 2011 Dubai International Racing Carnival, Michael Dods trainee Sweet Lightning made a winning return to racing in the UK at Doncaster. His best performance in Dubai had been a second behind Golden Sword in his first win of 2011. Geoffrey Riddle has more.

Listed below is the barrier draw for the 2011 Dubai World Cup, Dubai Sheema Classic, and Dubai Duty Free, all Group 1 races run at Meydan on Saturday. Kevin Shea on Golden Sword, Irish Flame, Bankable, and Reem – all live runners this Dubai World Cup

Long time rider for Mike De Kock, jockey Kevin Shea has four monumental chances on Dubai World Cup night. Having just missed in the 2010 Dubai World Cup (G1) when a fraction of a second late behind Gloria De Campeao, Shea is anxious for another chance. He’ll ride GOLDEN SWORD in the Dubai World Cup, and the newly-blinkered IRISH FLAME in the Dubai Sheema Classic (G1). Shea was second on Bankable in the 2010 Dubai Duty Free (G1) and hopes to go one better there as well. He was incredibly generous to give us some time after trackwork on Wednesday.

Bold Silvano to miss Dubai World Cup

One of the likely favorites for the 2011 Dubai World Cup, Bold Silvano will miss the 2011 Dubai World Cup (G1) after he “tweaked or pulled something” according to trainer Mike De Kock. Jason Ford of the Racing Post has the story. As a result, Golden Sword, previously moved to the Dubai Sheema Classic, will replace Bold Silvano in the big race for the same connections, which also start 2010 UAE Derby (G2) winner Musir.

Snow Fairy out of Sheema Classic

The pair will try and do it again on the big night, and Carl couldn’t be happier with his state, breeding added nerves now that the perceived pressure is on following the win in the $2 million race. Tazeez, Utley to run for Gosden in Duty Free, UAE Derby

The UAE Derby became quite interesting after trainer John Gosden announced his 3-year-old son of American sire Smart Strike will run in the $2 million race. Utley was last seen finishing seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf behind Irish or French Guineas possible Pluck. His presence in the race lends a new look to the UAE Derby which has, in recent years, been ceded to only the top local connections. Tazeez will be aimed for the Dubai Duty Free (G1), his first start since a Group 3 win in October. He ended his season with back-to-back wins over two-time Carnival winner Steele Tango, franking his form off the shelf.

Gosden won last year’s Dubai Sheema Classic (G1) with Dar Re Mi, her first start since November the previous year.

Chantal Sutherland to be first woman to ride in Dubai World Cup

Reports to DubaiRaceNight indicate that Game On Dude, controversial winner of the 2011 Santa Anita Handicap (G1), has received a formal invitation to the Dubai World Cup (G1). Further, Chantal Sutherland is scheduled to retain the ride for Bob Baffert, making her the first woman to ride in the world’s richest race. Baffert has trained two Dubai World Cup winners in Silver Charm (1998) and Captain Steve (2001). The invite for the improving gelded son of Awesome Again came likely as a result of the defection of Mendip, whom Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford announced as going to either the Dubai Duty Free or Godolphin Mile.

Sutherland’s simple appearance in the Dubai World Cup is a landmark achievement in her career, just three weeks after notching the most prestigious victory of her career. A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Sutherland began her career at Woodbine, Canada’s most prestigious track, and has spent considerable time racing in California in recent years. In 2010, Sutherland was third in the jockey standings at Woodbine, winning 136 races from 875 starts, and more than $8 million in purse earnings. Sutherland is also known for her breakthroughs in modeling which included a photo shoot in Vogue , and being named to People Magazine’s list of the “100 most beautiful people”.
