Smiling Tiger out of Breeders’ Cup Sprint; Hong Kong, Dubai possible stops

Smiling Tiger, one of America’s top sprinters, will indeed miss the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) due to a brusied foot and abscess, DubaiRaceNight.com has learned from Mersad Metanovic, racing manager for owners Klein & Lebherz. Earlier reports on Thursday suggested Smiling Tiger might miss the race.

Scheduled to go through the sales ring at Keeneland following a tilt in the Sprint, a race where he finished third in 2010, those sales plans are also likely to be scrapped. Tentative goals for the multiple Grade 1 winner, a son of Hold That Tiger, include the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint (G1) at Sha Tin on 12 December and eventually, the Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1) at the 2012 Dubai World Cup meeting. The Hong Kong Sprint closed its nomination period last week with Smiling Tiger as one of 15 Grade/Group 1 winners nominated to the 1,200 metres event over turf. 91 horses were pre-entered for the race, with Smiling Tiger among the 11 American nominees.

Rocket Man only fourth in Sprinters’ Stakes

Nakayama saw local filly Curran Chan score in the Sprinters’ Stakes (G1) as Rocket Man was under pressure a long way out and stayed on for fourth, his first non-top-three placing of his storied career. 2011 Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1) and KrisFlyer International Sprint (G1) winner Rocket Man pleased trainer Patrick Shaw following a Tuesday barrier trial at Kranji Racecourse. The son of Viscount was declared in good form for his pending international campaign, which begins in October with the Sprinters’ Stakes at Nakayama Racecourse, and is likely to be followed by the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint (G1) at Sha Tin in December. The 2010 Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1) winner, Kinsale King, will get back on track Sunday, four months after being scratched the morning of the 2011 Dubai Golden Shaheen, eventually won by Rocket Man. Trained by Carl O’Callaghan, Kinsale King won his 2011 debut at Golden Gate Fields but was turned out soon after his World Cup morning issues. Smiling Tiger, Timeform’s top rated synthetic horse in the world, drew the rail in the race. Euroears, second behind Rocket Man in this year’s edition, makes his first start back as well for trainer Bob Baffert.

Rocket Man passing on Australia, goal is a repeat Shaheen

2011 Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1) and KrisFlyer International Sprint (G1) winner Rocket Man will pass on a trip to Australia in favor of preparing for defence of his Dubai title, the Singapore Tutf Club media team reported today. Trainer Patrick Shaw identified starts in the Sprinters Stakes (G1) at Nakayama before the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint (G1) in December, all in route to getting back to Meydan.
