Godolphin’s Crime Scene, a winner on the opening night of the 2009 Dubai International Racing Carnival, hopes to get a solid prep while DIRC alum Basaltico hopes to secure a spot in the upcoming Emirates Melbourne Cup with a strong performances, if not a win, in today’s Geelong Cup (G3). Basaltico, trained by Luca Cumani, now carries the Melbourne hopes for the well-traveled trainer after his Cima De Triomphe flopped in the Caulfield Cup (G1) last week. As of now, Basaltico sits outside the top 24, the number of entrants available for Australia’s greatest race.

Crime Scene was a strong second, just a half-length behind Eastern Anthem in a handicap at Nad Al Sheba before that one went on to win the Dubai Sheema Classic.

With Dubai Duty Free winner Gladiatorus out, the hopes of Dubai racing fans sit with Gloria De Campeao for Saturday’s Arlington Million XXVII (G1), outside of Chicago. Over ten furlongs on the turf, a field of nine will head to the post with Gio Ponti a solid favorite on the heels of three consecutive Grade 1 victories.

Trained by Pascal Bary, Gloria De Campeao was installed as a 5-1 choice in the Million and will be partnered once again with T.J. Pereira. This will be his first start since a narrow victory over Presvis in the Singapore International Cup (G1) at Kranji in May, which followed a second to Well Armed in the 2009 Dubai World Cup (G1). Luca Cumani trainee Cima De Triomphe looms a danger from the international shippers while guaranteed pace presence Presious Passion will threaten to go all the way.

Citing numerous sources including Arlington Park and the International Racing Bureau, Daily Racing Form’s Marcus Hersh reported that 2009 Dubai Duty Free (G1) winner Gladiatorus and 2009 Singapore International Cup (G1) winner Gloria De Campeao are considered possibilities for the Arlington Million (G1) on August 8. Gloria De Campeao was a well-beaten second behind Well Armed in the 2009 Dubai World Cup (G1).

The race’s potential international entrants have been in flux for the last few weeks and there have been no other public reports indicating these two Dubai International Racing Carnival veterans were aiming for Arlington’s ten-furlong test. Luca Cumani has been on the fence about Cima De Triomphe, although various racing news sites noted that Cumani has ruled his charge out of this weekend’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Imbongi, a three-time Carnival starter racing for Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, is considered a more likely starter than all others mentioned.
