Friday’s feature race at Janadriah Racecourse outside Riyadh pits some familiar foes and names associated with the Dubai World Cup and the Dubai racing community. The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup (G1), run over 2,400 metres, is the premier racing event in Saudi Arabia and a field of 21 were drawn. Jerry Barton, winning trainer of the 2009 Dubai Golden Shaheen and successful conditioner for Prince Sultan Al Kabeer, starts three in the race, most notably Amor De Pobre (racing as Shibl Noofa). After setting the tempo with Gloria De Campeao last year, he faded in the lane of the 2010 Dubai World Cup. Stablemate Mensajera De La Luz goes as well after she had two lacklustre starts at Meydan last season. Olivier Peslier rides the top choice with Wigberto Ramos on the latter.

2009 King’s Cup winner Muller (racing as Alsaqr) gets the services of Ryan Moore for Prince Faisal bin Khaled bin Abdulaziz, fourth in the 2009 Dubai World Cup behind Well Armed. Last year’s Riyadh winner, Wind Flow, will defend his title for new owner King Abdullah and Sons, with former Godolphin runner Eastern Aria arming the leader’s camp as well.

DubaiRaceNight will post a result and any accompanying media when we have it.

Landing a knock-out victory of more than four lengths, Kuwait’s Wind Flow, owned and trained by Fawaz Al-Ghoraiban, took the 2010 Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup (G1) at Riyadh’s Al Janadriah Racecourse. The 2,400 meters trip was covered in 2:29.05. Muller (as Alsaqeer), the 2009 winner, was second with Olivier Peslier’s mount, Amor De Pobre (as Shibl Noofa), eight lengths behind the winner in third. Panamanian jockey Edgar Yanguez was aboard for the ride.

Wind Flow is by Dr. Fong out of the Sadler’s Wells mare, Spring. He raced most of his career in the United Kingdom in a variety of middling company, making at least 19 starts in 2009 according to racing data from Attheraces.com. His last win in the UK came in a February 2009 handicap at Wolverhampton and was preceeded by a claiming stakes win in January 2009. Defeating champions from South American in Muller, Amor De Pobre, and Joe Louis (as Kharimes, fifth), is wholly overwhelming to comprehend.

While racing in the UK, Wind Flow often raced with prominence and, even though conjecture, may have made all the running in the King’s Cup. We expect to learn more about this shocking victory in the days to come and will update this story as details warrant.

A field of 15 has been assembled for the most prestigious race in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the 200,000SR Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup (G1), also known as the King’s Cup. 2009 winner Muller (Alsaqeer) will attempt a repeat while top contenders Joe Louis (Kharimes) and Amor De Pobre (Shibl Noofa), winner of the local prep, attempt to unseat the title holder.

The King’s Cup is contested over 2,400 meters at Riyadh’s King Abdulaziz Racecourse at Janadriah. Oliver Peslier has the return engagement on Amor De Pobre, while Wigberto Ramos gets a leg up on Kharimes, who was last in the 2009 Dubai World Cup (G1). Both horses are trained by Jerry Barton, who managed his first Dubai Carnival win of 2010 with So Shiny last Friday. Sebastian Madrid partners the former winner, Muller, and it appears Christophe Soumillon gets the mount on field event.

On the undercard, former UAE Derby participant Lelah Dorak attempts to position himself for a return trip to Dubai in the King’s Cup for Saudi bred runners, and it is indeed notable that Ted Durcan will fly to Riyadh for the mount. Durcan also rides Qiyadiyah for trainer Badr Al Subiah in a different race. Qiyadiyah was defeated by Waasemah, who ran Thursday in the UAE 1000 Guineas (Listed).

The Saudi contingent that visits Dubai has been better than ever and this seems to have the making of another good renewal for the highlight of the Saudi racing season.

Amor De Pobre (racing as Shibl Noofa) dominated the Crown Prince Cup (G2) Friday at Al Janadriah Racecourse in Riyadh, the major local prep for the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup (G1). The 5-year-old, ridden by Olivier Peslier, won by some 5.5 lengths over Muller (racing as Alsaqeer), fourth in the 2009 Dubai World Cup (G1), and Himah. Cape Verdi (G3) winner Deem fourth over a trip that might be a touch too long. The 2,400 meters event was run in 2:28.85.

Winner of the 2009 Chilean Derby over the same distance, Amor De Pobre was announced as a likely DIRC runner but could end up running back in the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup in advance of a Dubai World Cup night engagement. Posted below is the video of Amor De Pobre winning the Chilean Derby in February 2009.

Owned by Prince Sultan Al Kabeer and trained by Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1) winner Jerry Barton, Amor De Pobre is a 5-year-old son of Santa Anita Handicap (G1) winner Stuka.

Joe Louis (racing as Kharimes) was a disappointing seventh, beaten more than 13 lengths.

Friday at Riyadh’s Al Janadriah Racecourse brings the Crown Prince Cup (G2), one of the most significant preps for Saudi’s premier throughbred event of the year, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup (G1).

Three prominent Dubai racing alums to contest the 2,400 meters event are Deem (pictured below), winner of the Cape Verdi (G3) over eventual Dubai City of Gold (G2) victress Front House, and Muller (racing as Alsaqeer), fourth home in the 2009 Dubai World Cup (G1). Joe Louis, 13th in the Dubai World Cup, also holds an entry in the field of 16, and will have regular rider Wigberto Ramos in the irons. The son of Lode narrowly defeated Muller in the 2009 renewal of the Crown Prince Cup.

Duque De Enghien, fifth in the 2005 UAE Derby (G2) and Amor de Pobre (racing as Shibl Noofa, a Group One winner in Chile) complete a four-horse Jerry Barton trained entry, which includes the aforementioned Deem and Joe Louis. Olivier Peslier, Barton’s main rider at the upcoming DIRC, will ride Amor de Pobre.

Kieran Fallon has a mount in the Crown Prince Cup when he partners former Luca Cumani stalwart Military Cross in a competitive heat.
