Rewilding provides Godolphin threat in King George

A late July slugfest is set for Saturday at Ascot in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (G1) as Arc champion Workforce is set to meet Dubai Sheema Classic (G1) and Prince of Wales’s Stakes (G1) victor Rewilding, joined by Ballydoyle favourite St. Nicholas Abbey.  Jockey Frankie Dettori terms Rewilding as “courageous.”  The Independent has more.

I’ve followed and bet on thoroughbred racing for 30+ years now, and you just never get used to seeing a horse break down in a race. I’ve seen more than a few horses break down in my lifetime, and it still lives me speechless every time. The way that Rewilding broke down in the King George, and the spill that Frankie Dettori took looked eerily similar to the spill that he took at Goodwood last season when Godolphin’s Film Score broke down fatally in the Gordon Stakes. Rewilding was such a talented horse. Personally, I believe his Sheema Classic and Prince of Wales’s Stakes win’s were just the tip of the iceberg to what Rewilding was going to accomplish in his career. I’m not saying that I believe Rewilding would’ve beaten Nathaniel in the King George even if he hadn’t broken down. But I would say that I don’t have a doubt in my mind that Rewilding would’ve definitely won at G1 level again in his career if this tragedy hadn’t befallen him. Heartfelt condolences to Sheikh Mohammed, Mahmood Al Zarooni, and everyone at Godolphin on the loss of this talented champion.
