The Dubai Sheema Classic (G1) looks a likely next stop for former Ballydoyle charge Joshua Tree, who took Thursday’s Qatar International Cup by 2.5 lengths over Amico Mio and old stablemate Beethoven. Now trained by Ibrahim Al Malki and ridden by Adrie De Vries, the victory was a reversal from previous preps. Joshua Tree made all of the running in the nation’s biggest international race over 2,400 metres, which gave the race its most accomplished foreign winner to date. Howard Wright has more for the Racing Post from Doha.

Joshua Tree is rolling into Dubai with a full head of steam. Boy, I can’t believe Aidan O’Brien and Ballydoyle let this colt go? Lightly raced, and still has the most potential for improvement of any of their 3yr.old’s still have, IMO. He’s ran well in every start this season, bar the Japan Cup. Which I believe you can consider a throwout race. Great run’s in the Great Voltigeur and the St.Leger. A really nice G1 win in the Canadian International Stakes at Woodbine. Then he win’s the G1 Qatar International Invitational Cup in just his second start at Qatar. If Snow Fairy and Buena Vista were going to race in the Sheema Classic? I’d say they’d likely go off as race co-favorites. But with it looking like they’re both more likely for the DWC, I think you can figure that Joshua Tree is going to be heavily backed in the Sheema. The only horse that springs to mind immediately that will likely get the kind of backing that Joshua Tree will is Mastery. Off of his brilliant Hong Kong Vase effort. JMO.
If Snow Fairy and Buena Vista go DWC instead of the Sheema Classic? I personally believe Joshua Tree is likely to be one of the co-favorites to win this year’s Sheema. Right now, I would think Mastery would be the other co-favorite with his Hong Kong Vase win. I also believe Victoire Pisa would be a strong bet if placed in the Sheema instead of the DWC. JMO.
