After a close fourth in the 2010 Emirates Airline Dubai World Cup, Gio Ponti has a win and two seconds in Grade 1 American turf races. Now, he cuts back to eight furlongs in advance of an uncertain placing for the 2010 Breeders’ Cup, starting as one of six in Saturday’s Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) at Keeneland. Joining him in the gate will be Courageous Cat, ninth in the Dubai Duty Free (G1), making his first start for trainer Bill Mott since that trip.
Earlier in the card, California Flag, the third home in the Al Quoz Sprint (G3), makes his second start since a summer break following his Dubai trip in Keeneland’s Woodford Stakes (G3). A full and incredibly competitive field of 12 will face California Flag, with most hoping to move on from there to the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G2). The $50,000 President of the United Arab Emirates Cup (G1) for purebred Arabians is offered as a new race in the fall and goes as Saturday’s third event.
