The Emirates Racing Authority released a summary of its full equine swabbing programme from the 2013-2014 season. Overall, 2,843 swabs were taken over the course of the season – 1,891 tests pre-race (specifically for TCO2), 712 post-race, 15 elective, and 225 non race day (out-of-competition tests. With 4,232 starters over the course of the 356 races held in the UAE, the number of post-race tests averaged two per race, an increase from the 1.76 tests/race in the 2012-2013 season. The total number of tests in the ERA have increased more than 87% in the last two seasons, while the total number of races is up approximately 10%.
Out-of-competition testing, defined by the ERA summary as a non race day test, was implemented for the first time this season, accounting for almost 8% of all tests.
Four post-race positives were uncovered during the course of the season, with the following prohibited substances found: Ibuprofen, Furosemide (anti-bleeding medication), Diclofenac (anti-inflammatory drug), caffeine.
