Dubai racing – “Moments of the Decade” – #4 – Jim and Tonic gets the better of two veteran warriors

The Dubai World Cup meeting had been established in 1996 when some of the world’s top class runners landed for the 2,000 meters dirt race.  It took a bit longer for the undercard events to take firm hold, and 2001 was a major launching point for that growth when New Zealand’s champion mare, Sunline (who won 32 of 48 starts in her career and was based in Australia), would join Hong Kong title-holder Fairy King Prawn, and France’s well-traveled super gelding Jim and Tonic.  The run was a dramatic thriller, certainly deserving of this accolade.

Earlier on the card, Japan’s Stay Gold bested Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Fantastic Light and Germany’s Silvano to take the Dubai Sheema Classic and continue the growing theme of the international nature of Dubai racing.
