If there were questions about Designs On Rome handling older, classier company in the Audemars Piguet Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1), they were well-dispatched after he defeated last year’s winner Military Attack, Dubai Duty Free second and Jebel Hatta winner Vercingetorix, and Kikuka Sho (G1) champ Epiphaneia.
All credit goes to jockey Tommy Berry on a superb ride, getting the jump on Vercingetorix and making it only a matter of whether or not he was catching Military Attack. As connections have said, the son of Holy Roman Emperor loves a fight, and he got that in the final 400 metres, running down Military Attack, landing the winning blow.
Watch the race below:
Vercingetorix simply never got a run, getting shuffled back around the far turn, essentially to last at one point, but gamely ran on for third once getting a clear shot. Trainer Mike de Kock says the son of Silvano will progress to the Singapore Airlines International Cup (G1) in three weeks.
