Oertel double highlights last of 2011 at Meydan

The Dubai World Cup Carnival is on the horizon beginning next Thursday, but in the meanwhile, Ernst Oertel led a double for the stable with Capital Attraction and Averroes (pictured first) in the final meeting of the calendar year in Dubai. A seven race card beckons in Abu Dhabi to kick off the campaign. Cristian Demuro, younger brother of Dubai World Cup winner Mirco, managed the win on Averroes in a race over 2800 metres, while James Doyle (pictured second), guided Capital Attraction.

Kilt Rock marks another UAE treble

Kilt Rock was the lone favourite to thrill the Jebel Ali racegoers on Friday as he managed his third consecutive win in as many starts at Jebel Ali, gunning up the middle of another 1,000-metre sprint. Under Wayne Smith, Kilt Rock’s win marked the 30th victory for the friendly gang at the Emirates Entertainment Racing Club. While Kilt Rock was closing the day at Jebel Ali, several others made nice showings, including He’sminenotyours, Atlantic Brave, and UAE debuter Daboos.

Daboos will definitely be one to watch after making his first start following a 422-day layoff. By Mr. Greeley out of the stakes-winning Not For Love mare, Touch Love, Daboos is a half to multiple stakes winners. Rated 73, he carried just 53 kilos to win a head over Ana Emarati, rated 80, and almost 2.5 lengths clear of Gold Pearl rated 88. Daboos gave 3.5 and 7 kilos to both horses, which surely assisted him in the victory. Atlantic Brave won a contested third race, the feature on the day, and gives the impression the Musabah Al Muhairi runners are fully rounding into form at the right time. This is one we anticipate seeing at the Carnival.

Retire Diamond Stripes – Please!

The winner of the 2008 Godolphin Mile, Diamond Stripes has fallen on hard times, and continuing to race is doing nothing to help the son of Notebook. After his Godolphin Mile victory, he was off for nearly two years before returning in a conditions event at Gulfstream Park, finishing fourth beaten seven lengths. Off another 18 months, he was entered at Remington Park in Oklahoma in October, finishing seventh beaten 18 lengths. Then dropped into a claiming race, where horses can be purchased, the old gray gelding was claimed for $15,000 in a race where he trailed through most of the race, finishing seventh beaten 20 lengths. Just yesterday, at Sunland Park in New Mexico, Diamond Stripes was last, beaten almost 30 lengths, racing for a bottom rung, $5,000 claiming tag. In his three starts since returning from an 18-month break, he’s been soundly defeated by nearly 60 lengths.

Better days – coming back from the Godolphin Mile victory under Edgar Prado

This soon-to-be 9-year-old has done good things on the track – no need to do more. Please retire Diamond Stripes.
