News broke Sunday that 2010 Dubai World Cup (G1) winner Gloria De Campeao was retired following the discovery of a torn tendon. Australian media outlets had the story first, following owner Stefan Friborg in relation to plans for his globetrotter to contest the Cox Plate.

Gloria De Campeao was second in the 2009 Dubai World Cup, behind Well Armed, and eighth in the 2008 edition behind Curlin. The son of Impression, bred in Brazil, raced three seasons in Dubai and his connection reported a glowing love for the desert conditions. After his second to Well Armed, Gloria De Campeao landed the Singapore Airlines International Cup (G1), which in 2010, would represent his final lifetime start, a second place finish behind the recently retired Lizard’s Desire.

Trained by Pascal Bary, Gloria De Campeao won nine lifetime starts from 25 opportunities with six seconds and three thirds. His career earnings top US$9,000,000. Stud plans have not been announced.

After finishing a relatively close eighth in the Maktoum Challenge – R3 (G2), Japan’s super-mare Vodka has been retired following another bleeding incident. By Tanino Gimlet, Vodka retires the richest female to ever race, with seven wins in Group 1 company of her ten lifetime scores. Click HERE for more from El Caballista. Vodka twice failed to show her best in the Dubai Duty Free (G1).

Considered one of the choices for the Dubai World Cup, she is now expected to be matched with Sea The Stars in the breeding shed. As countrymate, and filly, Red Desire ran so well in winning the Maktoum Challenge, perhaps the daughter of Manhattan Cafe can take up the mantle as one of Japan’s top race horses. The lead up to Dubai World Cup week will tell us.

Over the weekend, Mike De Kock used his website to promote the soundness and quality of South African bred throughbreds, while poking at South American private purchases, specifically those from Argentina.

“Lizard’s Desire and indeed Lucky Find flew the flag again for South African-breds. They are generally sounds, value buys as opposed to the horses in training from Argentina, where sellers have become unrealistic, way over the top. International buyers should be flocking to South Africa and I hope our breeders and owners stay realistic. That will keep our market lively and open.”

South African-breds have had enormous success at the Carnival, mostly due to the training exploits of De Kock and countrymate Herman Brown. Yet, some of De Kock’s biggest wins came with Argentine-bred horses, including Honour Devil and Asiatic Boy, both UAE Derby winners. Still, the disappointing Argentina-bred private purchases seem to outnumber the successful ones. Rocks Off, Blues And Rock, Boss Professor, and Jodi are some more recent De Kock Argentine imports who have failed to succeed in Dubai.

The winner of the 2007 UAE Triple Crown, Asiatic Boy (pictured below at the 2009 Dubai World Cup) has been retired to stud in his native Argentina. A son of Not For Sale, the 7-year-old horse accumulated lifetime earnings in excess of $3.3 million, triggered by his tornadic performances in Dubai at the 2007 Carnival and Dubai World Cup meeting.

Asiatic Boy romped him in the 2000 Guineas prep before taking the main trial, the Al Bastakiya, and then dominating the UAE Derby (G2). His last win was in the third round of last year’s Maktoum Challenge (G2) where he defeated Happy Boy and stable companion Art of War. Six of his seven lifetime wins came over the Nad Al Sheba strip.

After some decent efforts in the US, including a second in the 2009 Stephen Foster (G1) at Churchill Downs, the Argentine-bred was sent to his native land where he will stand the 2010 season privately.
