Bell, Cumani lend perspective to Dubai Duty Free

Michael Bell, trainer of WIGMORE HALL, and Luca Cumani, long-time conditioner of PRESVIS, joked together as to which should go first in our interview, Wednesday, after both oversaw their horses gallop the Tapeta. Only one horse (Ipi Tombe – 2003) has ever won the traditional Super Thursday prep for the Dubai Duty Free (G1), the Jebel Hatta (G2). As Wigmore Hall bested Presvis by a narrow margin, Cumani insisted Bell take the lead.

The Duty Free could end up the most competitive race on the DWC card. Wigmore Hall and Presvis both got excellent p.p. draws. But both are likely to drop out off of the pace early, anyway. I look for Richard Hills to have Derbaas somewhere close to the pace, and very likely Derbaas’s stablemate, Tazeez out on the lead. The unknown quantity in this race for me is Mendip. No question that Mendip is a supremely talented colt. But this will be his first career start on the surface, and Saeed Bin Suroor has really pitched him in deep against this field.
