2013 Dubai World Cup – R3 – Dubai Gold Cup Analysis

Race 3 – $1,000,000 Dubai Gold Cup (G3), sponsored by Al Tayer Motors, 3,200 metres, Turf

Honestly, our opinion on the form in this race is not a strong one. #1 IMPERIAL MONARCH seems very likely to go on with it from the inside, as #3 CAVALRYMAN and #4 SEISMOS in close attendance. #10 STAR EMPIRE and main prep winner #2 AHZEEMAH are likely to track from mid-pack with #8 TENENBAUM.  We just don’t have a strong-enough opinion to waste your time writing more about it. If you have an angle you find particularly beneficial, go for it.

  1. R3 #3 Cavalryman, #1 Imperial Monarch, #8 Tenenbaum

  2. My picks:

    1st – #2 Ahzeemah
    2nd – #3 Cavalryman
    3rd – #1 Imperial Monarch
    4th – #10 Star Empire

  3. Ironically, I find myself in 100% agreement with Pat Cumming’s picks for the Dubai Gold Cup. I think Imperial Monarch’s a very impressive horse, and I have no idea why he’s been so lightly raced by Aidan O’Brien? He won the Classic Trial over the Great Voltigeur winner and a couple of other very good prospects going the widest possible route at Sandown and covering a good furlong, maybe even 2 more than the field and still won on very soft ground. He got a terrible trip in the Prix Du Jockey Club, which he made up for by winning the Grand Prix De Paris. He didn’t run badly at Woodbine in the Canadian International Stakes. He just simply got beat by some very good older horses that day. All that being said, the step up from 2400 meters to 3200 meters is a first and an unknown for Imperial Monarch, although sons of Montjeu often improve the further they go. Cavarlyman on the other hand has come back into some of the best form he’s been in since his 3yo season with Andre Fabre in France, and he’s done so over this very trip, 3200 meters. He also goes very well on Meydan’s turf course.

  4. Type-o on my part about Imperial Monarch. I typed in sons of Montjeu when I meant to type in sons of Galileo often improve with distance. Apologies for typing in the incorrect sire.

  5. Averroes, Tenenbaum, Star Empire
